Gerard was born 1960 in Chelsea London. Having left school aged 16 he spent almost 25 years working in professional darkrooms based in Soho. The majority of work was related to the film and television industry, which entailed working closely with animation companies, film editors, directors, producers and in particular post-production houses, creating film titles. But it was a meeting with a client an American music photographer called Valerie Glendening that inspired him to start photographing live bands.

Having never owned or really used a camera, apart from a kodak instamatic as a youngster, he set about purchasing his first camera. Although a complete novice, armed with his new Olympus OM1 camera, Gerards first concert was the enchanting Kate Bush's Tour Of Life show at the Hammersmith Odeon in May 1979. From that show came his first published photograph which appeared in Smash Hits magazine, alongside the lyrics to "Them Heavy People". Combining his regular job he continued to photograph many more bands for the next few years. Including Adam & And The Ants, Blondie, The Specials, Bow Wow Wow, U2, Iggy Pop and Siouxsie And The Banshees.

His photographs have appeared on T-shirts, Posters and featured in various books and magazines, such as Mojo, Uncut, The Face, Smash Hits, NME, Record Mirror, Sounds and New Music News.

Gerard changed careers in the mid 1990's but has recently started photographing live bands again as well as various entertainment events.
